Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis initiated the Gothic architectural style with his rebuilding of the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis (dedicated 1144), introducing the pointed arch, ribbed vault, and flying buttress and pioneering the use of vast stained-glass windows.
