Abimael Guzman

Peruvian philosophy professor (1934–2021) who founded the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) in 1970 and launched a Maoist 'people's war' in 1980 whose extreme violence—massacring both landowners and peasants who resisted—killed an estimated 30,000 people; captured by police in Lima in September 1992, he died in prison in September 2021.
