Adam Mickiewicz
Adam Mickiewicz wrote Pan Tadeusz (1834), the Polish national epic, while in exile in Paris after the failed November Uprising of 1830-31. A central figure of the Great Emigration, he embodied the role of the poet as prophet and guardian of national memory in a stateless nation.
