Admiral Raymond Spruance
Raymond Spruance commanded Task Force 16 at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, an assignment he received only days before the battle after the regular carrier commander fell ill, and made the decisive tactical calls that led to the destruction of Japan's fleet carrier force. He went on to command the Fifth Fleet through many of the Pacific War's largest subsequent operations, including the Marianas and Iwo Jima campaigns.
