Adolf of Nassau

Adolf of Nassau was elected King of Germany in 1292 following the death of Rudolf I, his selection representing a deliberate snub to Rudolf's son Albert of Habsburg by the German princes who feared the consolidation of hereditary Habsburg power. Adolf was a minor count of limited resources. By 1298, the electors had grown so dissatisfied with Adolf's governance that they took the extraordinary step of deposing him and electing Albert of Habsburg in his place. Adolf refused to accept his deposition and raised an army, but was killed in combat at Gottheim on July 2, 1298, possibly struck down personally by Albert.
