Afonso I of Portugal

Afonso Henriques founded the Kingdom of Portugal, winning independence from the Kingdom of León and defeating the Moors at the Battle of Ourique in 1139. He expanded the kingdom southward and secured papal recognition of Portuguese sovereignty, earning the title 'The Conqueror'.
