Afonso VI of Portugal
Afonso VI was physically and mentally incapacitated; real power was exercised by the Count of Castelo Melhor. His reign saw the successful conclusion of the Restoration War with Spain's recognition of Portuguese independence in 1668. His brother Pedro engineered his removal and assumed the regency before becoming king.
