Agostinho Neto
Agostinho Neto (1922-1979) was a physician, poet, and the first President of the People's Republic of Angola. As leader of the MPLA he guided Angola through independence from Portugal in 1975 and the immediate civil war in which Cuban troops and Soviet arms helped defeat the FNLA and UNITA backed by South Africa and the CIA. His presidency established the MPLA as the governing party but was marked by ongoing civil war, nationalisation of the oil sector, and single-party rule.
