Ahmed Ben Bella
Algerian revolutionary (1918–2012) and founding member of the FLN who was imprisoned by France for much of the War of Independence; emerged as first President of independent Algeria in September 1962, implementing Arab socialist policies before being overthrown in a bloodless coup by defence minister Houari Boumédiène on 19 June 1965.
