Alaric I of the Visigoths

Visigoth king who sacked Rome on 24 August 410 CE — the first time the city fell to a foreign enemy in 800 years. Had spent years seeking a formal Roman military command and land settlement for his people. His sack was relatively restrained by ancient standards; churches were sanctuaries. Died of fever in southern Italy shortly after. Buried in the riverbed of the Busento, whose location remains unknown.
