Albert I of Habsburg
Albert I of Habsburg was the eldest son of Rudolf I and a formidable ruler who worked systematically to consolidate Habsburg power within the empire. After defeating and killing his predecessor Adolf of Nassau at the Battle of Gottheim in 1298, Albert secured the imperial throne. He successfully expanded Habsburg influence in the Low Countries and pressed claims in Bohemia and Hungary. He was murdered on May 1, 1308, while crossing the Reuss River near Windisch in Switzerland. The assassin was his own nephew, John of Swabia - known afterward as Johann Parricida - who believed he had been unjustly denied his inheritance.
