Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Russian novelist and historian who survived the Soviet Gulag and documented it in The Gulag Archipelago (1973). His work exposed the scale of Soviet repression to the world and contributed to the moral collapse of Western sympathy for the USSR. Expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974, he returned to Russia in 1994.
