Alfonso X of Castile
Alfonso X, known as the Wise or el Sabio, was King of Castile and Leon from 1252 to 1284 and one of the most intellectually remarkable monarchs of medieval Europe. In 1257, a faction of German princes elected Alfonso as King of the Romans in opposition to Richard of Cornwall, partly on the basis of his grandmother's Hohenstaufen lineage. However, Alfonso never visited Germany and his claim remained entirely theoretical. Pope Gregory X ultimately persuaded Alfonso to renounce his claim in 1275. His cultural legacy - the promotion of vernacular Castilian literature and science - places him among the most significant patrons of medieval European civilization.
