Andrea Doria

Genoese admiral who switched from French to Habsburg service in 1528 and took his fleet with him, which decided the Italian Wars in Charles V's favour. Genoa's navy was a private asset with a price, and the transaction shows what naval power meant before states owned their own fleets.
