Antoine Lavoisier
Antoine Lavoisier, the 'Father of Modern Chemistry', led the commission that developed the metric system and named oxygen and hydrogen. He was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. His Traité Élémentaire de Chimie (1789) established the modern framework of chemical nomenclature.
