Egyptian President (1970–1981) who launched the surprise Yom Kippur War against Israel in October 1973, then reversed course, visiting Jerusalem in 1977 and signing the Camp David Accords with Menachem Begin in 1978—the first Arab–Israeli peace agreement—for which both men shared the Nobel Peace Prize; assassinated October 1981.
