Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen
Archduke Charles, brother of Emperor Francis II, was Austria's most capable military reformer and one of the very few generals to defeat Napoleon in person, at Aspern-Essling in 1809. He was narrowly beaten at Wagram weeks later by a reinforced French army, but his reforms of Austrian military organization and tactics left a lasting institutional legacy.
