Archibald Wavell

Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell, was the British Commander-in-Chief Middle East (1939–1941) who directed the first Allied offensive of the war — Operation Compass — destroying an Italian army of 150,000 with a force of 36,000. He subsequently oversaw the East Africa campaign that expelled Italy from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. Despite these successes, Churchill replaced him with Auchinleck in June 1941. He later served as Supreme Commander ABDACOM in the Pacific (1942) and Viceroy of India (1943–1947).
