Archimedes of Syracuse
Archimedes of Syracuse was the greatest mathematician and engineer of antiquity. He calculated pi, determined the surface area and volume of a sphere, anticipated integral calculus, formulated the principle of the lever and the law of buoyancy, designed war machines that held off Rome for two years, and was killed by a Roman soldier at the fall of Syracuse despite orders to spare him.
