Aristagoras of Miletus

Having failed a military expedition to Naxos on behalf of Persia, Aristagoras incited the Greek cities of Ionia to rebel. He appealed to Sparta and Athens for support; Athens sent ships. The revolt was crushed by 494 BCE, but the Persian punitive expedition against Athens led to Marathon.
