Aristion of Athens
Aristion was an Athenian Epicurean philosopher who became tyrant of Athens after being installed by Mithridates VI of Pontus during the First Mithridatic War. He led a fanatical resistance against Sulla's Roman siege of 87–86 BCE, reportedly melting down sacred treasures to fund the defense. When Athens fell in 86 BCE, Aristion fled to the Acropolis but was captured and executed by Sulla.
