Aristobulus II

Aristobulus II was a Hasmonean ruler who served as both High Priest and King of Judaea, seizing power from his elder brother Hyrcanus II in 67 BCE. His rivalry with Hyrcanus II prompted both brothers to appeal to Rome, giving Pompey the pretext to intervene and besiege Jerusalem in 63 BCE. After the Roman capture of Jerusalem Aristobulus was taken as a prisoner to Rome, though he later escaped and continued to resist Roman rule until his death.
