Arius
Arius was an Alexandrian Christian presbyter born in Libya whose theological teachings sparked the Arian controversy, the defining theological dispute of the early Christian church. He argued that the Son of God was a created being subordinate to God the Father, a position condemned as heresy at the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE, which formulated the Nicene Creed asserting the Son was 'of the same substance' as the Father. Despite the council's condemnation, Arianism continued to spread and shaped the religious identity of many Germanic peoples who converted to Christianity.
