Arminius (Hermann)
Cherusci chieftain who served in the Roman auxiliary forces, earned Roman citizenship and equestrian rank, and used his knowledge of Roman tactics to destroy three legions in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. Prevented the permanent conquest of Germany beyond the Rhine. Killed by his own kinsmen in 21 CE. Known in German Romantic nationalism as 'Hermann' — a symbol of Germanic freedom.
