Artaphernes the Younger
Artaphernes the Younger was a Persian general who co-commanded the Persian expeditionary force at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE alongside the Median general Datis. He was the son of Artaphernes the Elder, satrap of Lydia, and was appointed by Darius I to lead the punitive expedition against Athens and Eretria. The Persian force was decisively defeated by the Athenians under Miltiades at Marathon, forcing Artaphernes and Datis to withdraw their fleet.
