Artemisia I of Caria

Artemisia I was the Greek queen of Halicarnassus in Caria who served as an ally and naval commander under Xerxes I during the Persian invasion of Greece. She is famous for her role at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, where she fought on the Persian side; Herodotus records that she was the only commander to advise Xerxes against fighting at Salamis, and that she rammed a Persian allied vessel during the battle to escape an Athenian pursuer. Xerxes reportedly said of her 'My men have behaved like women and my women like men.'
