Gupta-era mathematician and astronomer whose Aryabhatiya (499 CE) introduced a positional decimal place-value system, calculated pi to four decimal places, and correctly explained eclipses and the Earth's rotation on its axis -- laying the mathematical groundwork Brahmagupta would build into a formal theory of zero over a century later.
