Ashikaga Takauji

Samurai general who helped Emperor Go-Daigo overthrow the Kamakura shogunate in 1333, then turned against the emperor's attempt to restore direct imperial rule, founding the Ashikaga (Muromachi) shogunate in 1338 -- Japan's second warrior government, which would rule, with weakening authority, until the Sengoku period.
