Ashurbanipal
Ashurbanipal (reigned c. 668-627 BCE) was the last great king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. A literate ruler unusual among ancient warrior-kings, he assembled the Library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, the ancient world's first systematically organized library, containing over 30,000 cuneiform tablets including the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Enuma Elish. His military campaigns extended Assyrian power into Egypt, Elam, and Arabia. His palace reliefs at Nineveh are masterpieces of ancient art.
