Belisarius
Justinian's general, who retook North Africa from the Vandals in a single campaign and then spent twenty years fighting for Italy with forces the emperor would not enlarge. The reconquest he made possible exhausted the treasury and the recovered provinces alike, and most of it was lost within a generation of his death — the clearest case in late Roman history of a military success a state could not afford.
