Boleslaw I the Brave

Boleslaw I the Brave (967–1025) was the first King of Poland, crowned in 1025 shortly before his death. Son of Mieszko I, he dramatically expanded the Polish realm, briefly capturing Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, and taking Kiev in 1018. The Congress of Gniezno (1000), where Holy Roman Emperor Otto III visited the shrine of St. Adalbert and recognized Boleslaw's status, was a high point of Polish-German relations. He established the Polish church hierarchy and transformed Poland into a major European power.
