Brigham Young
Brigham Young led the Latter-day Saints west after Joseph Smith’s murder, settling the Great Basin from 1847 and founding Salt Lake City. As territorial governor and church president he directed the cooperative colonisation of the State of Deseret — the most cohesive religious subculture in the United States.
