Carl Djerassi
Carl Djerassi synthesised norethindrone — the progestin used in the first oral contraceptive — in 1951. A polymath who combined a distinguished scientific career with fiction writing and art collecting, he is often called the 'Father of the Pill' alongside Gregory Pincus.
