Carlos I of Portugal
Carlos I faced escalating republican opposition and endorsed the authoritarian government of João Franco who ruled by decree. In 1908 he was assassinated along with his heir Luís Filipe in Lisbon's Praça do Comércio — the first successful regicide in Europe in over a century.
