Charles Darwin

English naturalist who proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection in On the Origin of Species (1859). His voyage on HMS Beagle (1831–1836) provided the observational basis for his theory. Darwin's work fundamentally changed humanity's understanding of life on Earth and remains the unifying framework of modern biology.
