Charles François Dumouriez

Charles François Dumouriez (1739-1823) commanded the French armies at Valmy (20 September 1792) and Jemappes (November 1792), securing the early survival of the Republic and the conquest of the Austrian Netherlands. After defeat at Neerwinden (March 1793) and a clash with the Jacobin government, he defected to the Austrians in April 1793, a betrayal that intensified revolutionary suspicion of generals and contributed to the emergency atmosphere that produced the Committee of Public Safety and the Terror.
