Charles I of England
Charles I's conflict with Parliament over taxation and religion led to the English Civil War (1642-1651) and his execution in 1649, the first trial and execution of a reigning European monarch. His reign saw the growth of the tobacco colonies in Virginia and the beginnings of the sugar economy in the Caribbean.
