Charles IV of Spain
Charles IV was a weak king who allowed effective power to pass to his wife and her favourite Manuel Godoy. His disastrous Treaty of Fontainebleau (1807) allowed French troops to cross Spain, and he abdicated under Napoleonic pressure in 1808, triggering the crisis that launched Latin American independence.
