Chiang Kai-shek
Chinese Nationalist generalissimo (1887–1975) who led the Northern Expedition (1926–1928) to nominally unify China, ordered the Shanghai Massacre of communist allies in April 1927, led Chinese resistance to Japanese invasion from 1937 to 1945, and after defeat in the Chinese Civil War retreated with his government to Taiwan in 1949.
