Chief Black Kettle

Southern Cheyenne peace chief (c. 1803–1868) who signed the Treaty of Fort Wise (1861) and the Little Arkansas Treaty (1865) seeking peaceful coexistence; survived the Sand Creek Massacre of 29 November 1864 in which US troops killed around 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho; was killed along with his wife in Custer's surprise attack on the Washita River village on 27 November 1868.
