The father of Impressionism, Monet devoted his career to capturing the changing effects of light on the same subjects — haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, water lilies, the Thames. His 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name when a hostile critic used it as mockery. His late water garden series at Giverny, painted while nearly blind, are among the supreme achievements of Western art.
