Cleitus the Black

Cleitus the Black was a Macedonian cavalry officer and one of Alexander the Great's most trusted commanders, famous for saving Alexander's life at the Battle of the Granicus by cutting off the arm of a Persian nobleman about to strike the king. He was appointed satrap of Bactria and Sogdiana in 328 BCE, but at a celebratory banquet in Maracanda he openly criticized Alexander's adoption of Persian customs and his deification — enraging the king, who seized a spear and ran him through. Alexander reportedly was consumed by grief for days afterward.
