Cniva

Cniva was a Gothic king who led a major invasion of the Roman province of Moesia and Thrace in the early 250s CE, sacking the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv) in 250 CE. He inflicted a catastrophic defeat on the Roman Emperor Decius at the Battle of Abritus in 251 CE in a marshy ambush, making Decius the first Roman emperor killed in battle by a foreign enemy. The defeat sent shockwaves through the empire and marked a turning point in the Gothic threat to Roman frontier security.
