Comte de Grasse

Francois Joseph Paul, Comte de Grasse, commanded the French fleet that defeated the Royal Navy at the Battle of the Chesapeake in September 1781, sealing off Cornwallis's escape route by sea and making the siege of Yorktown decisive. He was defeated and captured the following year at the Battle of the Saintes, ending French naval ascendancy in the Caribbean.
