Comte de Mirabeau

Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau, was a disgraced nobleman who became the Revolution's greatest orator, using his thunderous eloquence to dominate the Estates-General and the National Assembly in its first two years. Despite his aristocratic origins he championed the cause of the Third Estate, arguing passionately for constitutional monarchy as the only sustainable settlement between liberty and order. He secretly negotiated with Louis XVI to serve as a royalist agent in the Assembly, a duplicity revealed only after his death in April 1791.
