Comte de Rochambeau
Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, commanded the roughly 7,800-strong French expeditionary force sent to support the Americans after the 1778 alliance. His disciplined regulars, combined with Admiral de Grasse's fleet, gave Washington the combined land and naval force needed to trap Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781, a campaign Rochambeau largely planned and that ended the war's major fighting.
