Conrad II

Conrad II was the founder of the Salian dynasty, elected King of Germany in 1024 following the extinction of the Ottonian line. He was a pragmatic and capable ruler who issued the Constitutio de feudis in 1037, which made fiefs hereditary for minor vassals in Italy. His most significant territorial acquisition was the Kingdom of Burgundy, which he inherited in 1033, substantially extending imperial territory westward and giving the empire its classic three-kingdom structure of Germany, Italy, and Burgundy. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 1027 and died in 1039 in Utrecht.
