Conrad III

Conrad III was the first king of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, notable for being the only medieval German king generally regarded as a de facto ruler of the empire who was never crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the pope. Conrad participated in the disastrous Second Crusade (1147-1149) alongside King Louis VII of France. His army was routed by the Seljuk Turks at the Battle of Dorylaeum in 1147, and the subsequent siege of Damascus ended in ignoble failure. He died in 1152, leaving the throne to his nephew Frederick Barbarossa.
