Constantine I
Constantine I, known as Constantine the Great, was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337 AD whose Edict of Milan in 313 granted religious tolerance throughout the empire and effectively ended the persecution of Christians. He reunified the Roman Empire after defeating his rivals, founded Constantinople as the new imperial capital on the Bosphorus, and convened the First Council of Nicaea to settle Christian theological disputes. His conversion to Christianity transformed the religion from a persecuted sect into the dominant faith of the Roman Empire.
