Constantine III

Constantine III was the Byzantine emperor for approximately three months in 641, the eldest son of Heraclius by his first wife Eudokia. He had been co-emperor since 613 and was the designated heir, but his succession was complicated by the existence of Heraklonas, his half-brother by Heraclius's controversial second wife and niece Martina, who was co-emperor alongside him. Constantine III was already ill with tuberculosis when Heraclius died in February 641, and he died in May of the same year, having reigned independently for barely three months. He was the father of the emperor Constans II, who would reign for twenty-seven years and stabilize the empire during the catastrophic Arab conquests.
